A home backup generator is a self-contained unit that sits outside your home, much like a central air conditioning unit. It runs on natural gas or liquid propane and can either power your entire home or just the most essential items.
It delivers power directly to the electrical panel of your home, so there is no need for extension cords. It turns on automatically when a power outage is detected and runs until power is restored, so your home will never be without power.
The unit runs off of your home’s existing natural gas or liquid propane supply, so you don’t have to purchase extra gas for it.
Whether you use a portable or home backup generator, selecting the right size is important. You’ll want to select a generator with a sufficient power rating to cover your needs.
Generally, a 22kw generator can power about 50% of a home, including all major appliances.
For the purposes of determining proper generator size, you can convert kw to amps using the formula this formula: I in amps (A) is equal to 1000 times the power P in kilowatts (kW), divided by the power factor PF times the RMS voltage V in volts (V):
I(A) = 1000 × P(kW) / (PF × V(V) )

If you aren’t sure what size of generator is right for you, contact Air Tech and we’ll come out and do an assessment to help you determine what type of generator to purchase.
As with any other gas-powered motors, generators must be properly maintained so that they work when you need them to.
Air Tech can assist with generator maintenance tasks such as changing the oil and oil filter and checking and/or replacing the battery when necessary.
Typically, a generator battery will last between 2-5 years, depending on how cold it gets outside and how often the generator is used.
Another potential problem area with generators is that sometimes the transfer switch connecting it to your home’s electrical panel can go bad. If this is the case Air Tech can replace your transfer switch and get your generator working again.
