Benefits of Gas Logs

There are many benefits to having a gas log fireplace in your home. Here’s just a few that many people mention as reasons they install a gas log fireplace:

  • Ambiance: There’s nothing like gathering around a warm fireplace on a chilly fall or winter evening. If you host family gatherings or parties in your home, a fireplace will add to the festive atmosphere.

  • Zone Heating: Especially in the case of ventless fireplaces (more on that below), gas logs are a great way to heat a room of your house without turning on your central heating system. It’s a great way to keep your energy bill down in late fall or early spring, where a little heat can go a long way.

  • Home Value: In a 2013 survey conducted by the National Association of Realtors, 40% of respondents said they’d pay more for a home with a gas log fireplace, making it one of the most sought-after features on the list.

  • Back-up: If the power goes out in the winter, a gas log fireplace is a great backup source of heat.

Unlike wood-burning fireplaces, gas log fireplaces aren’t messy, they don’t require constant tending, they’re much safer, and much less of the heat is wasted.

Vented Vs Ventless Gas Log Fireplaces

There are two main types of gas log fireplaces—vented fireplaces and ventless fireplaces.

As the name implies, vented fireplaces produce some type of byproduct that must be vented to the outside air (through a chimney or vent pipe), while ventless fireplaces are completely self-contained and can even be installed in a cabinet rather than embedded in the wall.

There are several big advantages to ventless fireplaces, including:

  • All the heat produced by the fireplace is circulated in the room, making them a cost-effective way to heat a room of your house.
  • The fuel burns almost completely, meaning they produce much less pollution than vented fireplaces.
  • Ventless fireplaces use less fuel than vented fireplaces

The only downside to ventless fireplaces is that they gradually deplete the oxygen in an area, meaning that you’ll need an oxygen depletion sensor and carbon monoxide detector to use them safely. However, unless you are using the fireplace in a very small area or for long periods of time, oxygen depletion is usually not a problem.

Fuel Sources for Gas Log Fireplaces

Gas log fireplaces can use either liquid propane or natural gas. Each method has some advantages and disadvantages.

Liquid propane burns hotter and can be used where natural gas is not available, but it is more expensive and must be stored in an external tank outside your home.

Natural gas is cheaper and dissipates into the atmosphere after combustion, but is not available in all areas.

In general, if your home already uses natural gas appliances, you’ll probably want to use it for your gas log fireplace as well.

Sizing Your Gas Logs

When purchasing gas logs, it is important to get the right size. If you’re purchasing a ventless system that comes with the logs included, you don’t really have to worry about this, but if you are installing gas logs in an existing fireplace, you will need to decide what size to get.

Factors you’ll need to consider include:

  • There must be sufficient room for the gas burner system.
  • The logs must be smaller than the width of the rear of the fireplace.
  • Height of the fireplace must also be considered.

If you purchase gas logs from Air Tech, we’ll make sure that you get the right size for your situation.

Gas Log Accessories

There are many accessories available for gas log fireplaces, some functional and some decorative.

Decorative accessories include lava rocks, cracklers, fake embers, and other accessories that make the fireplace look and feel more like a traditional wood-burning fireplace.

Functional accessories include remote controls, thermostats, wall switches, and cleaning supplies.

Troubleshooting Problems with Gas Log Fireplaces

Typical problems that sometimes crop up with gas log fireplaces include:

  • Logs will not light
  • Logs will light but won’t stay lit
  • Pilot light won’t stay lit

Most of the time, a good cleaning and possibly replacement of the thermocouple will fix all of the above problems.

If you’re experiencing problems with a gas log system—even one that we didn’t install—we can fix it for you for a very affordable price.
